VGNCloud
VPS stands for virtual private server: a virtual machine with its own reserved CPU, memory and disk, running on a physical server that it shares with other virtual machines. In practice it is a Linux machine you rent. You get root, your own IPv4, and a disk. It is not shared web hosting and it is not a whole physical host. On VGNCloud the live list is the VPS page.
The short version
Think of a computer in a hall you do not walk into. You SSH in. You install what you need. Neighbours cannot see your files. That is a virtual machine. We sell that, as KVM, not as a container that shares a kernel. KVM VPS.
VPS, virtuaalipalvelin, cloud server
The same product wears three names. Finnish copy often says virtuaalipalvelin. Shops also write cloud server. Here they all point at the VPS. Cloud server or VPS. โVPS hostingโ is the category name, not a second SKU. VPS in Finland has the plans in a table.
What is a VPS used for
Anything that needs its own process, port or software on a Linux machine. Common jobs:
- Websites and web apps that need more than shared hosting allows: your own Nginx, PHP version, Node.js or Python.
- Docker containers and small self-hosted services, such as Nextcloud for a team.
- A VPN for yourself or a small team, for example WireGuard.
- Bots, background workers, queues and cron jobs that must run all the time.
- Databases, APIs and test or staging environments.
- Learning Linux and server administration on a machine you can reinstall.

When you need one
